Why We Are Here

Every festival season the same thing happens. A filmmaker from San Antonio or Houston or the Valley finishes something remarkable, screens it to a room that understands exactly what they made, and then watches it disappear, because nobody wrote it down.

That is the gap this magazine was built to close.

Voz Latino is not a fan publication and it is not a trade sheet. It is a record. We intend to cover independent Latino cinema the way serious criticism has always covered work it respects: closely, specifically, and on the assumption that our readers are filmmakers themselves.

Craft first. We write about coverage and cutting patterns, about sound design and production design, about what an actor chose not to do. Adjectives are cheap and a filmmaker cannot use them.

The region is not a satellite. Texas and the Southwest are not a waiting room for Los Angeles.

Lineage matters. No one making a film today is starting from nothing.
